On 10 October 2024, NN Group Finance and Corporate Responsibility hosted the third Sustainable Finance Event in the series. The event focused on social responsibility, exploring topics such as employee wellbeing, human rights, and community investment. Through a series of keynotes, insightful interviews, and a lively panel discussion, both internal and external experts shared their perspectives and experiences on these topics.
The focus of this event was on the “S” in ESG: Social Responsibility. While the environmental and governance aspects of ESG are well-known within the financial services industry, social responsibility still prompts conversations around its relevance and necessity.
During the event, we learnt that, as a large insurer, employer, and investor, NN is well-positioned to address societal challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality. These issues are not only relevant to our business, but also important to our customers, communities, and other stakeholders. Incorporating social elements into our operations is about creating lasting positive change, while also meeting the expectations of today’s more socially conscious consumers, especially younger generations.
The event also emphasized how a focus on social responsibility strengthens employee morale and retention. In a competitive market, people want to work for companies that not only care for their workforce but also contribute to meaningful social causes.
This event marked the conclusion of NN’s Sustainable Finance programme, included a rich mix of multidisciplinary professionals from across Finance, Responsible Investment, Corporate Strategy, HR and Procurement. NN’s sustainability reporting will transition to the line and become part of what we refer to as ‘Business as Usual, incorporating Sustainability in our day-to-day tasks and way of working.
However, a key takeaway from the event was that sustainability should not become ‘Business as Usual,’ nor should it be pushed to the backseat or fade into the background. Quite the contrary, as sustainability is much more than meeting reporting requirements.
At NN, we understand that sustainability should be incorporated in our values, corporate strategies and daily decisions as well.
