'The finance industry is so complex, so it makes the work interesting every day'

‘I’ve worked in financial and insurance companies before, and I’m still impressed by complexity of IT in these kinds of companies. The finance industry is complex, so it makes the work interesting every day. NN gives you plenty of opportunities to try new things, learn about new technologies, grow and develop your tech skills.

‘When I was a child, I wanted to be a journalist, but I was always interested in computers and electronics. I wanted to know how everything worked. I wanted to build stuff and develop new things. But even though I chose IT for my career, I can still pursue my passion for journalism. The curiosity to explore new topics, ideas, and communication skills come in handy when I talk to business representatives and my team members.’

Building from scratch

‘As a Software Engineering Lead, I provide support for my team and I work very closely with Product Owners and Tech Leads to ensure we develop the things that are most needed. Our product domain is complicated, so the team is constantly solving challenges together. Right now, we’re building a brand-new sales platform. It will help our agents sell our insurance easier and faster. The system architecture is quite complex, and there’s a whole team of architects and developers working on it. It’s very difficult to build a system that’s able to meet the requirements of our future business, but it can be very rewarding. At the end of the day, it’s very satisfying to see your solution deployed to production. It makes all the hard work worth it.

‘At NN, we always choose the best tools for the work we do. We use modern technologies like Docker, Kubernetes and others. We also use Jira and other project management software, to ensure we keep all of our work streamlined and effective. We want to stay up to date with latest frameworks, so we often do Proof of Concept (PoC) projects to experiment and see if they can help us solve problems.

There’s also a chance to work in different teams. NN is a big company, with lots of engineers and projects, so you’re able to switch to a new role if you want to grow in different areas or try something new.’

A true community

‘Lots of my colleagues like to work from home, but the whole team still gets together in person once every two weeks. You can get a lot done in Teams calls and using shared planning software, so we can work remotely effectively. But to me, nothing can replace a shared table. Working with markers and sticky notes, looking each other in the eyes and solving problems together in the same space. It’s also good for our mental health to share a cup of coffee together and get to know each other personally. The team members are a real community, and being together strengthens that community.

‘NN is a great place to work if you want to have an impact on your job and take on responsibility. It’s not always easy to build a team with the right skills and abilities, but once you have it, it's very satisfying to be a part of it.’
