You’re given freedom, responsibility and trust here’

Matthijs van der Meijden - Cloud engineer NN Investment Partners

How I started at NN Investment Partners

‘Responsibility, independence and the ability to switch between different tasks quickly. These are the qualities you need as a cloud engineer at NN Investment Partners (NN IP). I developed these qualities during my training in the Retail and Wholesale Trade and afterwards at Hoogvliet Supermarkets. But I quickly discovered it wasn’t the right place for me and I wanted something completely different. That’s when I started a Software Engineering degree. In 2016, I started at NNIP as a cloud engineer: I began with an internship, became an external student employee, graduated and joined the company.’

AWS and innovation: the perfect combination

‘I now work as an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Solutions Architect. AWS is Amazon’s cloud provider. Working with AWS aligns with NNIP’s strategy: we are increasingly leaving our own data centres and are opting for AWS serverless solutions where possible. This platform offers the very latest technology, endless possibilities and a huge amount of freedom. This allows me to fully focus on new functionalities for the business and I never have to worry about issues such as capacity and storage. Added to this, our DevOps teams are building and managing their own applications.’

‘My team is part of Investment Innovations. We help the NN IP investment teams with innovation. These teams are often strongly focussed on their own activities, such as share and bond trading. To ensure that the investment teams are better able to share information, we have set up the Papyrus Platform, a kind of internal Twitter, where analysts and portfolio managers can post information about businesses. This information can be important when making decisions about investing or even withdrawing capital from a business. We use machine learning to also try and discover trends based on this information. This type of innovation is a piece of cake with AWS.’

Working remote at my girlfriend’s house in Ukraine

‘Thanks to the flexibility offered at NN IP, I spent a couple of weeks working remotely at my girlfriend’s house in Ukraine. A long-distance relationship has its challenges, particularly right now given that the coronavirus restrictions mean we can’t fly. She’s decided to come to the Netherlands, which is why I submitted a request to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service. I’m actively involved on the forum of Stichting Buitenlandse Partner (a foundation for people with non-Dutch partners). On the forum, people with a non-Dutch partner can share their experiences and exchange information such as on passports and residence permits.’

‘What I missed in my previous job I’ve found at NN IP. I’ve also been able to develop further here. For example, we’re continuously working with state-of-the-art technology and I’m encouraged to use it. In addition, from the outset, you’re given freedom, responsibility and trust here. This means that my manager gives me all the scope I need, as long as my internal customers are happy.’
