‘If I have a good idea, I can just get on with it here’

Lejon Bergman - Full Stack Developer and creator

Building websites is really exciting

‘Creating is the common thread that runs through my life. Whether that’s building web applications and queries now at Nationale-Nederlanden or cooking at home. I started here as a Back End Developer in a reporting team, which mainly involved converting data into information, such as in the form of tables. But what I missed most of all was the tangibility of an end product. A website is something you can showcase. And building websites is really exciting, so I switched to a role as a Full Stack Developer. This involves working on a product from start to finish: you don’t just work on the back end, but also on the front end. It has allowed me to use the knowledge I had gained in the reporting team and build something tangible for the customer.’

Vue.js: a single application is enough

‘For the bank end, we use the Eclipse programme directly on the SAP HANA database. We load the results to the SAP Business Warehouse, and unlock them via SAP Gateway to our front end. I build web applications using the open source framework Vue.js. We used to work separately with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. With Vue.js you make a single page application, which is a single application that loads various pages, depending on the interaction. That works really well. In the past, if you built a graph with buttons, you had to do it in three files. Now you can do it with just one.’

‘Our team is working on the Human Capital Planner. It’s a great example of how we turn pension data into useable and visible information for our customers. Using this pension platform, employers who have a pension scheme with Nationale-Nederlanden can easily obtain an insight into how the pension scheme is built up and the workforce, the choices made by the members and the costs of the pension scheme. The Human Capital Planner helps employers meet their so-called duty of care to offer their employees the best possible pension.’

Unlimited opportunities

‘Nationale-Nederlanden is a diverse company. That’s something I celebrate. There are lots of places where you can learn new things and at the same time build on what you’ve already learnt. And where you can work on your personal development. Just look at my move from Back End to Full Stack. But it’s also possible to switch to a different business unit. If you’ve mapped out a path for yourself, the opportunities are basically limitless.’

Tinkering on my old-timer moped

‘Creativity is a constant theme in my life. If I’ve got an idea in my head, I try and think of ways of putting it into practice. So, for example, I’ve built my moped from a bare frame. I spent hours trawling through the internet to find the right parts until I got the moped looking how I wanted it. If I have a recipe in my head when I’m cooking or brewing beer, I search for the ingredients and techniques I can use to recreate the recipe. I’ve also got a large vinyl collection, so I’ve got the right background music when I’m working on my hobbies. It’s a vast collection, from the 1960s to present day. From old blues to electronic music.’

‘Craftsmanship, creativity, music. It’s all reflected in my work. If I come across a problem, I look at what I need to solve it creatively and efficiently. Of course, with a record playing in the background. That’s what challenges and fulfils me in my work at Nationale-Nederlanden.’
