Meet our tech colleagues

Wouter van Enk - DevOps Engineer, go-getter and coxwain

'As a team of nine, we’re responsible for managing the desktops and laptops of our internal customers worldwide. We don’t just deal with hardware. We also work on the operating systems and software. Agile working and the freedom and responsibility we have as a team are also reasons for choosing NN. Here, you decide what you do and how you do it. I call it ownership. The almost limitless training opportunities also appealed to me. If you’ve got particular interests or want to develop in a specific direction or job, NN gives you all the support you need.’

Roxana Gogorici - DevOps Engineer, skateboarder and expat

‘I’ve been interested in tech since I was a kid. My first job was as a Junior Network Administrator, responsible for the wires and cabling for computer networks. Once I discovered DevOps, I wanted to learn as much as I could about it. I liked the idea of working on both sides of the field. You have to understand the development side, but also have the operations mindset to make implementations work in practice. The field changes all the time, so I still keep in touch with my former Cisco instructors and friends in the IT field, to stay up-to-date on the latest developments their students are working on.’

Mark van Straten - Lead Developer, coach and beekeeper

'Beekeepers are essentially nerds and their passion makes them knowledge experts. Knowledge-sharing means making a connection. For me, it’s not primarily about the software, but about bringing people together. As a knowledge ambassador, I seek out the users, try and understand the problems they’re facing, bring all the pieces of the complex puzzle together and develop software with my team that matters to them. But how do you know whether your strategy has worked? Ultimately, you can see it in your results  - whether that’s in the honey or at work.’

Mike Wallet - Cyber Security Specialist

‘Smooth. Digital. Introduction. Teams. Remote working. These five key words characterise my first few months at NN. If you were to ask me to sum up my experience in a single phrase, it would be: ‘In spite of the coronavirus crisis, I got off to a great start’. It took a bit of getting used to because the coronavirus crisis meant that I was working full-time from home. But I got lots of support, including my laptop being delivered to my home. The digital onboarding was also brilliantly organised. Before I started I received an app with information about the company, which meant that I was fully prepared for my first day at work.'

Lejon Bergman - Full Stack Developer

‘Craftsmanship, creativity, music. It’s all reflected in my work. If I come across a problem, I look at what I need to solve it creatively and efficiently. Of course, with a record playing in the background. That’s what challenges and fulfils me in my work. Nationale-Nederlanden is a diverse company. That’s something I celebrate. There are lots of places where you can learn new things and at the same time build on what you’ve already learnt. And where you can work on your personal development. Just look at my move from Back End to Full Stack. But it’s also possible to switch to a different business unit. If you’ve mapped out a path for yourself, the opportunities are basically limitless.’

Matthijs van der Meijden - Cloud Engineer

‘What I missed in my previous job I’ve found at NN. I’ve been able to develop further here. For example, we’re continuously working with state-of-the-art technology and I’m encouraged to use it. From the outset, you’re given freedom, responsibility and trust here. For example, thanks to the flexibility offered at NN, I spent a couple of weeks working remotely at my girlfriend’s house in Ukraine. This means that my manager gives me all the scope I need, as long as my internal customers are happy.’

Vijai Ramcharan - Innovation Architect, culture lover and family man

‘As an 11 year-old in the 1980s, my older brother took me on a trip to the V&D store, where there was a Commodore computer. My brother showed me how to write a simple computer program. At the end, your name appeared on the screen in a form of animation. It was amazing. The feeling of creating something was really cool. You could say that I’ve been a techie at heart from a young age. As an Innovation Architect at NN, I now work on technical innovations consistent with a business in transformation. We use state-of-the-art tools to create our applications, the kind that start-ups also use. These tools include AWS Lambda, Serverless computing, Node.js, GraphQL, TypeScript, React, React Native.’

Erik Ammerlaan - Full Stack Engineer and organist

‘From a young age, I’ve had a fascination with programming. I wrote my first code when I was eight years old. So, I knew early on that I wanted to do something with computers when I was older. I found and still find it interesting how technology can help make people’s lives easier and better. For example, at secondary school, I developed an electronic learning environment where teachers could put their teaching material for the students. It was an asset for the school because it saved a lot of time.’

Manuel Mazarredo - Auditor, Ethical Hacker, father and Ironman

'I’ve always wanted to help people in whatever way I can. I used to be a project manager and in that role I ensured that people could get the best out of themselves so that we could make the project a success. Helping people is what I did in my volunteer work in Central America. It was about education, people and not just money, but teaching the right knowledge and skills for them to constructively and continuously improve.’

Aafke Croockewit - UX Designer, DJ and kitesurfer

‘I started at NN as a freelance UX designer. I really value freedom, creativity and responsibility and they aren’t things you immediately associate with a large corporate. That prejudice was quickly dispelled. I work in a team with other designers and developers. We’re like an independent unit in the organisation. We set our own work and are given lots of room to innovate. The projects are very varied and you can decide whether you spend more time on concept development or on implementation. And because we all get on so well together as a team there’s a great atmosphere. All in all, reason enough for me to give up the freelance life. And I’ve got a lot of benefits in return.’

Martijn Walter - Digital Technical Solution Analist and innovator

‘We can’t ignore it: IT is crucially important for Nationale-Nederlanden. We’re experiencing more and more competition after all. New providers are using the latest IT technology. This makes it important to stay connected and working on a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure is a huge challenge, especially as we’re working with obsolete computer systems in some parts of the organisation. However, these systems need to be optimally integrated with new technologies to continue to meet user demand.'
