Arnoud Diemers | Head of Innovation and Responsible Investing Platform

'Investment technology is about innovation: how can we use new technology, such as artificial intelligence and data and machine learning to achieve our goal? We use behavioural science to help us better understand how financial markets behave. This is primarily about sentiment. For example, if there is an escalation in trade conflicts between countries, the financial markets anticipate this immediately, without this having to be reflected in the figures straight away. To predict and anticipate this behaviour, we also use data and machine learning.

Petra Stassen | Client Portfolio Manager

‘Basically, I’ve got orange blood flowing through my veins, because a lot of my family members have worked at Nationale-Nederlanden: My father, my grandfather, two uncles and a cousin. I started to work here 11 years ago. After studying economics in Rotterdam, I worked briefly at the ‘Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek’ (Statistics Netherlands). Not surprising really because I have a great affinity with figures, but I soon realised that the world of statistics was too one-sided for me. That’s why I made the switch to the ministry of Finance, where I not only gained policy experience, but also practical experience in the dealing room with issuing bonds and dealing in derivatives.’

Jeroen Bos | Head of Equities Specialties

‘When I get to the office, I start by analysing what’s happened during the previous evening and night. There’s always a stock market open somewhere in the world, which makes investing very dynamic. Have there been any developments that have an impact on our investments? Do we need to buy or sell? A couple of years ago, for example, Japan was hit by a tsunami that washed away a large section of the railway track. NN IP had invested in one of the Japanese rail companies and that night the share price had immediately fallen by around 20 percent.'

Ewout van Schaick | Head of Multi Asset

‘At NN, I started as a portfolio manager and was immediately given responsibility for a number of portfolios. I carried out transactions in the portfolios of course and was also responsible for customer accountability. As the Head of Multi-Asset, I currently have ultimate responsibility for the performance of all portfolios with several investment categories, such as equities, bonds, liquidities, and other investment instruments. I also look at the asset allocation top-down: the allocation of assets across the various categories. I usually let my specialist colleagues chose the underlying securities.’

Bregje Roosenboom | Client Portfolio Manager

‘NN IP is very involved in innovation. To give you an example: partly because pension fund legislation and regulation in the Netherlands has been tightened further, we’re developing solutions to support our customers with this issue. In this case, the solution involves integrating ESG factors, enabling us to target our experience in this field specifically at the wishes of the customer. In addition, we’re constantly looking at the role innovation can play in our strategies and for our customers. That’s why we also have data strategists in the team, who maintain and develop quantitative processes.’
