How long have you been working at NN and what was your first job?
I started working at NN in March 2017, so I have been in this job for almost a year. My career so far has only been in the field of responsible investment, and I have been doing this for more then 10 years. My first job was with Institutional Shareholder Services (now called ISS Ethix) in Brussels, where I joined as a corporate governance analyst. After that I have worked for an asset manager (MN) and a research firm (Sustainalytics).

Why did you start working at NN?
I believe that investors do not only have the fiduciary duty to deliver a positive financial return to their beneficiaries, but that they also have a duty to deliver a positive impact to society as a whole. NN has been doing this for several years and achieved a lot of positive change. The job was however far from done, and needed to be developed further. This was also what attracted me, the opportunity to create a positive impact with a large financial institution in the Netherlands.

What do you like most in your job?
I like the fact that no day is ever the same. I was hired as a corporate governance specialist, but I have been working on social themes (ex. labour rights in the supply chain) and environmental issues (ex. carbon footprint of our investment) as well. NN, but also my manager, give me the freedom and flexibility to work on different topics but also stimulate me in creating new ideas, policies and projects for the company.

What is the biggest challenge in your job?
Since no day is ever the same, it is sometimes difficult to work on something for a longer period. That in combination with time pressure, makes it sometimes difficult to really focus on one task for a longer period. Within the team a normal day can be filled with helping out client requests, engagements with companies in which we invest, preparing for meetings but also the development of papers and research.

How is the culture within the department?
The responsible investment team is fairly small (3 people), but we have a good working relationship. We supplement each other in work experience, and support one another with the tasks assigned. The team also works closely with other teams, for instance the sustainable investment teams and the corporate citizenship at NN Group, and it is really fun to work with them but also learn from their experience.
