I’ve been with NN for almost 20 years. I started as an external consultant and became an internal consultant in 2003. Depending on what we discuss with our team in the daily stand-up meeting, and what’s on the sprint Backlog, my day begins. It can be very diverse, from development to operations. Sometimes, I work on implementing a brand-new server or on improving an application or service, and at other times, I support internal service users with problems. What makes agile working such fun is that you have a wide responsibility as a team. Because what you develop and bring to production, you also have to manage. That’s really different from how it used to be, when development and operations were two separate worlds. This joint responsibility means that we also share lots of knowledge.

My current focus is on ensuring that Office 365 works properly for the entire NN Group. This includes all the business units and central services of NN Group in the Netherlands and abroad. I’m currently concentrating on rolling out the use of a new Office 365 service, Microsoft Teams, at NN. This is a Microsoft collaboration platform, which enables users to share and manage information, knowledge and applications quickly and effortlessly, so that teams can work together more and enjoy better collaboration.

For a long time, it was a trend at NN to outsource IT and the primary focus was on a control function. As a result, our people were no longer on top of the technology and knowledge gradually ebbed away from our organisation. During this time, I also held a variety of coordinator roles, but now the wind is blowing from another direction. At NN, there’s so much IT work to do that we want to do it ourselves again and want to fully embrace technology and develop our knowledge further. This means that we want to attract and retain good IT professionals. This new trend marks NN’s transition to a fintech organisation with a DevOps engineering culture where there is lots of interesting work for IT professionals.

I also enjoy the open culture. In the past, insurance companies probably had a reputation as traditional organisations, but that hasn’t been the case for a long time. NN really is a flat organisation in which colleagues, from senior to junior, are approachable and willing to help one another. It’s an organisation in which employees are given all the scope they need to develop and progress, including people who’ve worked here for 20 years, where freedom and flexibility are highly valued. Because, I can say what I want to do, when I want to do it and where – here, at home or somewhere else – and how I want to do it. As a result, I’m able to maintain a good work-life balance.
